Wardrobe Design Guide: Sliding, Hinged or Walk-in?
The right wardrobe is planned around what you own and how you dress. Compare sliding, hinged and walk-in options, plus the interior fittings worth investing in.
A wardrobe is the hardest-working piece of furniture in a bedroom. Choose the wrong type and you’ll fight it every morning; choose well and getting dressed becomes effortless.
Hinged wardrobes
Classic swing doors open fully, so you can see everything at once. They’re versatile, easy to customise and suit most bedrooms.
- Pros: full visibility, flexible internal layouts, a wide choice of finishes
- Consider: you need clearance in front for the doors to open — typically 60 cm or more
Sliding wardrobes
Sliding shutters save floor space and create a sleek, continuous façade — ideal in compact bedrooms or where the bed sits close to the wardrobe.
- Pros: space-saving, a modern look, great for large mirror or glass panels
- Consider: you can only access part of the wardrobe at a time, and quality track hardware is essential
Walk-in wardrobes
A dedicated dressing area with open or glass-fronted storage, drawers, a dressing table and often an island for accessories. Walk-ins suit larger master suites and villas.
- Pros: everything visible, room to dress, a boutique feel
- Consider: it needs space and good lighting, and glass shutters are worth it to keep dust out
Plan the inside first
Before choosing shutters, list what you need to store. A good wardrobe interior balances:
- Long hanging for dresses, sarees and coats
- Short hanging (often double-tier) for shirts and trousers
- Drawers for folded clothes, innerwear and accessories
- Shelves for bulky items, with adjustable heights
- Specialist fittings — trouser pull-outs, tie and belt racks, jewellery trays, a concealed locker
Finishes and details that elevate a wardrobe
- Profile shutters with tinted or fluted glass for display sections
- Integrated sensor lighting that switches on as the door opens
- Soft-close hinges and drawer channels
- Lacquer, veneer or mirror shutters chosen to complement the bedroom palette
Design the inside of a wardrobe around your life — and the outside around your room.
